My name is Karl Wendel Rice. I'm 25 years old, and I live with my wife and 5-year-old daughter in Monterey, California. I started drawing when I was very young. I traced and copied characters in comic books. I drew my shoes. I drew my own hands. I had a knack for it, and kept practicing as I grew up.
When I graduated from high school in 2008, I enrolled in the Art Institute of California, San Francisco, but I wasn't ready for a serious commitment to rigorous work. I was too young, not mature enough by half. So I moved to New Zealand for three years, tending bar and then managing a restaurant for two years.
In New Zealand, I thought about tattooing as a career, but when I came back and met my soon-to-be wife and child, I decided that I was going to need more reliable work. I enrolled in the online division of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and graduated with a 4.0 and received a B.S. in Graphic Arts and Animation in December, 2015.
Originally, I wanted to be a concept artist for movies or games. I always find the most interesting part of games to be in the customization of characters (and the art of monsters). I still enjoy that work, but I've been gravitating towards fine arts - painting and sculpture - and I've fallen in love with digital sculpting and modeling, which I hope to make into my career.
